Hernia Surgery
Hernia occurs when tissue, such as part of the intestine, protrudes through a weak spot in the abdominal muscles. The resulting bulge can be painful, especially when you cough, bend over or lift a heavy object. However, many hernias do not cause pain. Most hernias which cause symptoms should be surgically repaired.
The most common site for hernias to develop is the abdomen.
Hernia Types
Inguinal Hernia - a bulge occurring on either side of the pubic bone
Femoral Hernia - a bulge occurring below the groin in the upper thigh area
Umbilical Hernia - a bulge occurring in the belly button area
Ventral Hernia - a bulge along the midline of the abdomen
Incisional Hernia - a bulge at the site of a previous surgery, usually below a scar
Hiatal Hernia - a defect in the diaphragm allowing abdominal organs to slide into the chest cavity
