Colon Surgery

The Colon (also known as the large intestine) is an organ that is part of the digestive tract. It plays a vital role in the digestion of food and the production of stool.

Unfortunately, the colon can develop outpouchings known as diverticula which can become infected resulting in severe abdominal pain and infection. Recurrent episodes of diverticulitis can be treated with a partial colectomy, where part of the colon is removed.

In addition approximately 4% of people in the United States will develop colon cancer which if caught in its early stages can be cured with the removal of the affected part of the colon.

The main function of the Colon is to reabsorb water.

Diverticulosis: The presence of small pouches (Diverticula) in the digestive tract

Diverticulitis: Inflammation of the diverticula in the colon

Volvulus: Occurs when a loop of intestine twists around itself and causes a blockage of the bowel (Bowel Obstruction).

Colon Cancer: development of cancer arising from a polyp in the colon. Occurs in approximately 4% of the population and unfortunately is the third leading cause of cancer related death in the United States
